Ocean4Kids – Ocean Sciences and Technologies (GIS/AI) for Kids (1st Edition – 2025)

Climate and ocean changes have become a major global driving force in past decades, putting more than 56 million inhabitants in West Africa at risk and threatening 56% of the GP of all coastal countries from Mauritania to Benin. Cabo Verde and Senegal, Small Islands and/or Developing Countries (SIDS) are particularly exposed to climate change impacts affecting communities’ environment, health, and incomes.

In partnership with the Universidade Técnica do Atlântico (UTA) in Mindelo, the  PADI Foundation and the Schlumberger Foundation, Ocean4Kids Cabo Verde stimulates 60 children (6-12 years old, at least 50% of girls) from public schools and the fishing community (Aldeia SOS Mindelo, Escola de São Pedro, Myrtle Atividades Educativas) and provides an introduction to Ocean sciences and Technologies (GIS/AI) using a Montessori approach. This program will include 3D Virtual Reality and Visualisation of Ocean data, colouring activities and manual workshops on marine biodiversity. While encouraging them to embrace the STEM Curriculum to address ocean-related challenges in their home country.

Ocean4Kids Cabo Verde is endorsed by the United Nations  Decade of Ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development, and directly contributes to the:

  • 2063 African Union Agenda Goals

  • Ocean Decade challenges: 6 (Increase community resilience to ocean hazards), 9 (Skills, Knowledge and Technology for all), 10 (Change Humanity’s relationship with the Ocean)

  • United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 4 (Quality Education), 5 (Gender Equality), 9 (Innovation), 10 (Reduced Inequalities), 11 (Sustainable cities and communities), 13 (Climate Action), 14 (Life below water), and 17 (Partnerships for goals).
