International Experience
International Experience
Open to the world thanks to over 10 years of international experience and 20 countries, Dr Awa Bousso DRAMÉ is a Cabo-Verdean and Senegalese Researcher in Ocean Sciences and GeoAI (AI, GIS, Remote Sensing) and the Founder/Executive Director of CoastGIS Research Institute based in Cabo Verde and Senegal. She is also affiliated with the University College London (UK).
Pioneer in Ocean Sciences and GeoAI in West Africa, Dr Dramé is particularly committed to African Island States (BOS / SIDS*) thanks to her roots in Mindelo, São Vicente Island, Cabo Verde. She attended Top World Universities including Sorbonne University (Paris, France), Columbia University (New-York, USA) and the University College London. Her expertise and contributions to science, women empowerment and SDGs achievement have been internationally recognised with prestigious awards, including the 2022 L’Oréal/UNESCO Women in Science Award and the 2023 Forbes Africa 30under30s Class listing her as one of the most influential and innovative young Africans in the world.
Furthermore, Awa turns her research into social impact, decision and policy-making for governments and international organisations, including the Senegalese Government (Senegal National AI Strategy), IREX/US Dpt of State Educational programs (Mandela Washington Fellowship), UNESCO, and the Prince Albert II Foundation. Over the past years, she has been appointed Secretary of Women in GMES & Africa (African Union, geospatial program) and a UN Ocean Decade Strategic Advisory Board Member to implement the 2030 vision.
Moreover, she is strongly committed to gender inclusion in her STEM educational programs (GEN4STEM, Field2Lab, Ocean4Kids) which reached 21 countries in West Africa and trained more than 450 women and girls. GEN4STEM and Field2Lab were successfully featured in the 2025 UNESCO Open Science Hub and the 2025 UNESCO Global Compendium for Gender Inclusion in STEM, while Ocean4Kids Cabo Verde was endorsed by the United Nations Ocean Decade.
SIDS* = Small Island Developing States, but according to her, BOS (Big Ocean States) (Raguain, 2025) is the most appropriate term that better expresses Islands Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs)
