Coastal Research & Data Gaps
Addressing data gaps remains a critical challenge for effective coastal and ocean governance, particularly in climate-vulnerable regions. In West Africa, limitations in the availability, accessibility, and integration of coastal and marine data continue to constrain risk assessment, long-term monitoring, and evidence-based decision-making.
This ongoing research explores structural and contextual dimensions of coastal and ocean data gaps, with a focus on their implications for environmental monitoring, policy design, and sustainable coastal management. The work contributes to broader international efforts aimed at strengthening ocean data systems and improving the usability of scientific information for decision-makers.
Initial research insights have been presented at the UNESCO/IOC Second International Ocean Data Conference (IODE-II), held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on 21 March 2023.
The research is ongoing. Further findings and outcomes will be communicated through appropriate scientific and institutional channels.
